The Law
  • The law is good because it shows us which way to go in life for our own good.
  • The law is good because it convicts us of our sin.
  • The law imprisons.
The Lessons
  • What is the prison of sin? It is being addicted to doing something destructive, even if you don’t want to do it. That’s because your will is imprisoned.
  • How do we get free? Only Jesus can bust us out of our jail. He does what we cannot do for ourselves. He frees the addicted prisoner. He restores us to God.
  • How do we read the Bible in order to find this word of liberation Jesus provides? What we don’t do is rush to the New Testament to find a bunch of Christian laws. Instead, we read both the Old and New Testaments devotionally, spiritually, and prayerfully. And as we read we ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us the Word of God which is the revelation of God in Jesus.
  • Ironically, as we commune with this Word in the Bible, with Christ, we suddenly are able to do what we know to be right.  We can obey the law. We can steer our lives the right way down the road. We can have faith, give, love, and do justice. Not because we have to, but because we want to. And because in Christ we are free to do what is right.
