When Jesus says, “I am the bread of life” He means us to understand…
  • That God is uniquely at work through Him.
  • That God is at work meeting daily needs, especially the needs of the left-out and locked out, through Him.
  • That God is offering new life and a new way to live through Him.
Lessons ---
  • The truth is always hard for those of us who thought Jesus would settle for less than He demands.
  • Jesus never panders to His would-be followers.
Three Realities ---
  1. The Jesus-Way is difficult, offering the way to true life.
    • Jesus isn't for everyone. Clearly, one must be mysteriously drawn to Jesus by the Father. Clearly, to come to the understanding that Jesus is the Holy One from God who alone possesses the words of eternal life one must decide to come to faith and become convinced that He is truly who He says He is.
  2. The Jesus-Way is difficult, costing everything.
    • True faith is the unsettled reality that the path on which one is set makes no sense and therefore doesn’t seem to correspond to real life.
    • True faith costs the follower of Jesus everything he/she has.
  3. The Jesus-Way is difficult, and is therefore often rejected.
    • It is better to have a handful that will eat His flesh and drink His blood than a crowd who will simply observe curiously from far off.
    • The Jesus-Way isn’t a philosophy which we accept, or a theory to which we give allegiance. It is a personal response to Jesus Christ.
